Black Women in Health and Wellness

In celebration of Black History Month, WiSER is excited to host a virtual panel discussion showcasing the contributions, achievements, and lived experiences of a diverse group of black women in health and wellness. Our event will be held virtually via Zoom on February 12th from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm MST. We invite you to join our panel discussion and listen to our guest speakers! In addition to hearing from our panelists, we will also have a short Q&A period in the end!

Meet our speakers!

Dr. Cecilia Bukutu

Dr. Cecilia Bukutu is a Professor of Public Health at Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) and an Adjunct Professor in Pediatrics at the University of Alberta (UAlberta). She earned her MPhil and PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Cambridge and completed post-doctoral fellowships at City University (UK) and UAlberta. Cecilia has spearheaded many successful grant funded public health research initiatives. Her projects include the Speak Science Simply Program, the VacciNation Project, and the current multi-institutional Building Healthy Communities Mentorship and Resilience Program (MRP). In addition to her research leadership, Cecilia is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of researchers, having supervised students and postdoctoral fellows on various health-related projects. Her contributions to research and scholarship have been recognized with the President’s Dare to Discover Award at UAlberta and the Gerald S. Krispin Research Award at CUE.

Dr. Reneé Robinson

Dr. Reneé Robinson is an accomplished scientist with over 18 years of experience in scientific research and regulatory affairs. Currently, she serves as a Scientific Evaluator within the Risk, Research and Advice Division at Health Canada’s Office of Cannabis Science and Surveillance. In this capacity, she contributes to Health Canada’s regulatory research program on cannabis by designing research projects, analyzing data and writing reports. Dr. Robinson’s passion for science is rooted in her extensive educational background. She earned a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Ottawa in 2007 and followed it up with an MSc in Microbiology and Immunology in 2010 from the same institution. Later, she pursued and successfully completed her PhD in Biology specializing in Plant Molecular Biology at Carleton university from 2014 to 2018. Throughout her distinguished career, Dr. Robinson has authored numerous publications in the fields of microbiology, plant molecular biology, and cannabis contributing valuable insights to the scientific community.
